Euro gains as German Ifo business climate signals a solid recovery

According to data released by the Ifo Institute of Germany, the business climate index rose from 86.7 in July to 88.8 points in August, exceeding the market consensus forecast of 87.2 points. This reflects a notable recovery, reaching the highest level since August 2025. The business expectations index registered a significant increase from 86.8 to 89.1 points, suggesting that German companies are growing more optimistic about future periods, despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. Concurrently, the current conditions index advanced from 86.5 to 88.5 points, indicating that the underlying economy is signalling improvement following a period of weakness for Europe's largest economy.

Currently, the German economy is the largest within the European Union. Consequently, any tangible economic recovery carries significant implications for the wider region, which has been impacted by elevated energy costs and generalised geopolitical instability.

Following the economic release, the euro appreciated marginally against the US dollar by 0.09%. At market close, the EUR/USD pair traded at $1.1672.

Technical analysis of the EUR/USD pair

From a technical standpoint, the EUR/USD pair continues to signal market indecision as it oscillates within a defined consolidation range. Key observations include:

  • Trend Context: Over the longer term, the pair remains bound within a sideways consolidation pattern, trading above its 100-day and 200-day Simple Moving Averages (SMAs) and reflecting widespread market caution.
  • Resistance Levels: Should the current bullish impulse continue, the next major technical ceiling is identified at $1.1765—a prominent structural resistance level. A decisive breakout above this zone would signal the potential for further upside towards higher valuations, notably the $1.1900 level.
  • Support Levels: In the event of a market retracement, two key support levels stand out at $1.1520 and $1.1367. A breach of these levels would significantly increase the probability of a deeper market correction.
  • Momentum Indicators: The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is exhibiting an upward trend, signalling that bullish momentum could continue. Nevertheless, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is trading in overbought territory, warranting caution regarding the upward trajectory.
