The oil refineries in Texas have shut down due to the rain and floods caused by Hurricane Harvey. The loss of production could result in more than 1 million barrels per day of refining capacity in Houston and Galveston, and that does not include hundreds of thousands of barrels in Corpus Christi.
Shell closed the Deer Park refinery in southeastern Houston, one of the largest refineries in the United States with a production capacity of 340,000 bpd. Exxon Mobil has also shut down its huge refineries in Texas, with a production capacity of around 560,000 bpd.
Several other companies have announced the closure of a number of refineries, and the Magellen pipeline company has announced the suspension of the crude and refined oil pipeline, meaning that the rest of the refineries will also be closed.
The Bureau of Safety and Environment announced that nearly of 22% of the current production in the Gulf of Mexico has stopped, representing about 378 thousand barrels per day of the total 1.75 million barrels per day in the region. Mexico will be heavily affected as oil tankers have stopped moving to and from Texas.
