U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said that United States is moving ahead with its bilateral trade deal with Mexico even if Canada is excluded because negotiators cannot resolve acute differences over dairy products and the dispute resolution system.
Trump administration is planning soon to present the text of the US-Mexico trade deal, which was announced last month to Congress to revise parts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Lighthizer said in New York yesterday.
The timetable is important because the current Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto, wants to sign the deal before Andres Manuel Lopez succeeds him in December, Lighthizer added.
He also said, I think Canada would like to be in agreement, I think the United States would like to agree with them, if not, we will have to do so in a separate deal as soon as possible.
Trump had previously proposed two separate bilateral trade deals with his NAFTA partners.
