Trump says coronavirus death toll may reach 100,000 Americans

US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he now believes that up to 100,000 Americans could die from the coronavirus. This exceeds his previous estimates, but he said he is confident that a vaccine will be developed by the end of the year.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he expects a rapid recovery of the US economy and blamed the spread of the epidemic on China, where the disease is believed to have originated.

More than 1.1 million Americans have been infected and more than 67,000 have died from the virus in the US. Up to now, large sectors of society have been closed, including schools and businesses, to contain the spread.

Currently about half of America’s states have moved towards at least a partial lifting of the closures given that the number of new infections has decreased and citizens push for a loosening of constraints that have plunged the economy into chaos.
