By CNBC : The explosion outside Manchester Arena on Monday night that killed 22 people was a "callous terrorist attack", U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May told the media after chairing an emergency security meeting.

She said that 59 injured people are still being treated in hospitals across Manchester, some of them for life-threatening conditions.

The attack in Manchester following a pop concert was "among the worst terrorism we have experienced in the United Kingdom," May said.

The British authorities are aware of the identity of the perpetrator, but are not yet prepared to disclose this information at this point. According to the prime minister, the attacker carried out the explosion on his own and authorities are investigating whether he received any support in preparing the incident.

May added that police will seek out and bring to justice any others who are involved with the attack. May, who is travelling to Manchester to speak to the authorities on the ground, will chair another security meeting later on Tuesday.

The terror threat in the U.K. remains at severe.
