Juneteenth: A federal holiday celebrating freedom and liberation
Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19th, commemorating the emancipation of African American slaves
US banks and the stock market are closed on this day
If June 19th falls on a weekend or close to it, an additional holiday is observed
What does "Juneteenth" mean?
The holiday, commonly referred to as Juneteenth, is a fusion of the terms "June" and "19." It is also recognized by names such as Independence Day, Freedom Day, Second Independence Day, and Emancipation Day. This year, Juneteenth, formally recognized as National Independence Day, will be commemorated on Monday, June 19th.
Reasons for the celebration
The origins of Juneteenth can be traced back to the celebrations initiated by freed slaves in Galveston, Texas. Although President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 proclaimed the freedom of slaves, its enforcement in several Southern regions was only made possible after the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. Even then, certain slave owners, who continued to benefit from their labor, were hesitant to disclose this significant news.
In June 2021, President Biden signed a bill that had been approved by Congress, officially establishing June 19th as a federal holiday. Juneteenth became the most recent addition to the list of federal holidays in the United States.
Will banks be closed?
Each year, as part of the Juneteenth celebrations on June 19th, authorities announce the closure of banks. Furthermore, in recognition of the emancipation of African American slaves, the American stock market, including the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, also shuts down on this day.
In situations where June 19th falls on a weekend or near the beginning or end of the week (such as a Friday or Monday), an additional official holiday is designated. This occurred last year, and similarly, this year, the market will be closed on June 16th and will resume operations on Tuesday, June 20th, making Monday an official holiday.
Will there be trading on the Juneteenth holiday?
There will be no trading in global markets during the Juneteenth holiday. Since 2021, Juneteenth has been recognized as an official holiday and one of eleven federal holidays recognized in the United States. This will also be a bank holiday, including the US Federal Reserve, commercial banks, other financial institutions, and post offices. The US bond market will be closed on June 19th, 2023.
