Coca-Cola beats expectations but warns of rising costs, while Boeing misses on weak production

The Coca-Cola Company and The Boeing Company published their latest quarterly earnings reports, presenting a mixed picture for corporate profitability.

On the one hand, The Coca-Cola Company (KO) outperformed analysts' consensus expectations for both net revenue and earnings per share (EPS). The beverage giant reported revenue of $13.35 billion, exceeding the forecast of $12.92 billion, alongside an EPS of $0.91, above the expected $0.88. Against this backdrop, these financial results reflect a year-on-year (YoY) revenue expansion of 7.6% and an 11% YoY increase in EPS.

Notably, the company warned of accelerating cost pressures and persistent consumer softness extending into 2027, weighing heavily on investor sentiment. Specifically, management highlighted rising packaging and freight expenses, driven by elevated commodity, fuel, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) costs linked to escalating Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions, as cited by Reuters. Furthermore, surging aluminium prices have compressed profit margins, as tariffs continue to disrupt supply chains for industrial producers.

At the market close, Coca-Cola shares fell by 1.64% to settle at $91.18. Nevertheless, in terms of year-to-date (YTD) performance, the stock retains a cumulative appreciation of approximately 30%.

On the other hand, The Boeing Company (BA) delivered mixed quarterly results, topping revenue forecasts whilst missing earnings per share estimates. The aerospace manufacturer reported revenue of $24.19 billion for the third quarter of 2026, surpassing the consensus forecast of $23.95 billion. Conversely, Boeing posted a net loss per share of $0.34, wider than the $0.25 loss anticipated by market analysts. Nevertheless, these figures represent a YoY revenue increase of 3.9% and a marked bottom-line improvement compared with the Q3 2025 loss of $7.47 per share.

Crucially, the industrial manufacturer announced that it would miss its full-year 737 production and jet delivery targets, marking a setback in its operational recovery, as cited by Reuters. This announcement sparked bearish market sentiment, causing the company's shares to tumble 10.69% to close at $168.18. In the YTD, Boeing's shares have declined by 23% approximately.

US durable goods orders increase, exceeding market estimates

According to data published by the US Census Bureau, orders for durable goods expanded by 1.8% month-on-month in September, surpassing consensus analysts' estimates of 1.5%. Although this monthly growth aligns closely with historical averages, it represents the sharpest expansion since April 2026, indicating a potential rebound in corporate long-term capital investments.

Notably, the report revealed that the expansion was predominantly driven by a robust 4.6% rebound in transportation equipment orders, as cited by Trading Economics. This performance highlights the underlying resilience of corporate capital allocation and productivity in the United States, as enterprise demand for technological innovation continues to expand.

Following the economic data release, major US equity benchmarks advanced in unison, with market participants turning their attention to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision scheduled for later this week, alongside quarterly earnings reports from mega-cap technology leaders, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon. At the market close, the S&P 500 index rose by 0.60% to 7,722 points, the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.29% to reach 29,651, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average appreciated marginally by 0.03% to finish at 52,383 points.
