Oil retreats sharply as reduced US–Iran tensions ease geopolitical risk premiums

Oil prices fell sharply amid rising hopes of a conflict resolution between the United States and Iran. According to Reuters reports, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington was engaged in "good talks" with Tehran, indicating the potential to reach an agreement over the conflict. Nevertheless, Trump cautioned that US strikes could resume should negotiations fail. These statements followed an operational ceasefire agreed between the two nations during the week.

Concurrently, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei noted that bilateral messages were still being transmitted through mediators and that Tehran remained open to diplomacy, as quoted by Reuters.

Following these developments, key crude oil benchmarks dropped sharply: the Brent futures contract (BRNV6) fell by 11.27% to $85.87 per barrel, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures contract (CLU6) decreased by 10.41% to $82.54 per barrel. However, despite this significant sell-off, both benchmarks retain an appreciation of approximately 20% for the month of July.

Market participants are now focusing on ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the US and Iran, as well as escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait over recent days.

What is the focus for market participants this week?

Market participants face a week packed with significant economic and corporate releases. On one side, mega-cap US technology firms are set to announce their quarterly earnings results, with Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon drawing particular scrutiny.

Concurrently, key central banks will decide their monetary policy stances: namely the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Japan. Global investors are keenly awaiting guidance regarding the Federal Reserve's economic outlook. The CME FedWatch Tool currently reflects an implied probability of 59.9% for keeping interest rates unchanged, alongside a 40.1% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike—leaving scope for potential market volatility should a policy surprise occur.
