Altcoin market stays range-bound despite new SEC proposal on crypto assets

Altcoin market capitalisation remains stagnant despite an SEC proposal on crypto assets, as ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on risk assets.

According to a Reuters report, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed a new regulatory scheme that, if approved, would make it easier for crypto firms to issue tokens and raise capital. The SEC’s proposal seeks to support digital asset entrepreneurs by establishing a tailored regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.

Although this is currently only a proposal, it signals growing regulatory support for the cryptocurrency market in the US. If the proposed regulatory standards progress over time, this could build a bridge between digital assets and traditional financial markets. Reuters notes that, upon formal approval and publication, the SEC's proposal will be subject to a 60-day public comment period.

Conversely, Reuters and CNBC reported that US President Donald Trump said there were no ongoing talks with Iran and no diplomatic negotiations scheduled. Furthermore, President Trump declared that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports remains in force and that the Strait of Hormuz is open. In contrast, Iranian negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the US meets Iran’s conditions—most notably, lifting oil sanctions, ending the port blockade, and unfreezing Iranian assets.

Consequently, current geopolitical instability reflects an adverse environment for crypto assets, as underlying inflationary pressures continue to support expectations of potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

As a result, total altcoin market capitalisation continues to trade close to $886 billion, with prices remaining stagnated within a range-bound technical pattern—a reflection of market uncertainty driven by conflicting factors. Regarding market concentration, Bitcoin dominance remains firm at approximately 59% of the aggregate cryptocurrency market capitalisation, leaving altcoins with a combined market share of 41%.
