US retail sales fall below expectations to a multi-month low
According to data from the US Census Bureau, retail sales contracted by 0.6% month-on-month in July, missing market forecasts of a 0.1% increase. This contraction represents the lowest reading since May 2025. An analysis of Trading Economics data suggests that the downturn was primarily driven by non-store retailers, which saw a drop of 2.2%. Furthermore, sales fell at motor vehicle and parts dealers (-1.8%), petrol stations (-0.9%), and electronics and appliance stores (-0.5%). Consequently, year-on-year (YoY) retail sales growth decelerated from 6.8% to 5.0%.
Following the economic release, US equity benchmarks fell in tandem, weighed down by weak retail figures and declining consumer sentiment reported by the University of Michigan. The S&P 500 index dipped by 0.17% to 7,785 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 0.20% to 53,737 points, and the Nasdaq 100 index decreased by 0.13% to 30,046 points.

University of Michigan consumer sentiment drops below market consensus
The University of Michigan reported that US consumer sentiment declined from 55.2 points in July to 51.0 points in August, missing the market consensus estimate of 54.5 points. The University’s report signalled that this deterioration was driven primarily by an 11% drop in business condition expectations. Additionally, confidence regarding Republican politicians declined significantly.
Concurrently, the University of Michigan updated its inflation expectations: one-year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.3% (up from 4.2% in the previous reading), whilst five-year expectations remained unchanged at 3.3%. Coupled with the weak retail sales report, subdued consumer sentiment exerted modest downward pressure on the equity market, causing indices to depreciate slightly.

The industrial giant achieved revenue of $9.12 billion, surpassing consensus forecasts of $8.99 billion. Concurrently, the firm reported an EPS of $3.50, beating expectations of $3.40.
