  • China's retail sales growth slowed to 0.6% in July, falling short of the 1.5% market expectation.

  • Chinese industrial output growth eased to 4.5%, weighed down by weak domestic demand and adverse weather conditions.

  • Major US retailers Home Depot, Target, and Walmart are scheduled to release their Q2 earnings reports this week.

Chinese industrial production and retail sales decelerate, missing market expectations

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, year-on-year retail sales growth decelerated from 1.0% in June to 0.6% in July, missing the market consensus forecast of 1.5%. An analysis by Trading Economics indicates that during this period, automobile sales dropped by 17.0%, building materials fell by 14.2%, furniture decreased by 8.8%, and petroleum products sales declined by 7.6%. Conversely, sales of communication equipment surged by 20.4%, cosmetics increased by 6.8%, tobacco and alcohol advanced by 6.0%, and food products rose by 5.3%. Consequently, retail sales performance reveals that Chinese domestic consumption continues to struggle to recover, maintaining a downward trajectory over the past three years (see Figure 1).

Concurrently, data released by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that Chinese industrial production growth eased from 5.3% in June to 4.5% in July, missing the market consensus expectation of 5.0%. The report signalled that this deceleration was primarily explained by weak domestic demand and disruptions caused by extreme weather conditions.

Nevertheless, following the economic releases, the FTSE China A50 Index advanced by 1.72% to 15,166 points, while the Hang Seng Index appreciated by 1.32% to 25,425 points.

Oil prices rise amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East

Oil prices increased amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East surrounding the US–Iran conflict. The Brent crude futures contract (BRNV6) advanced by 2.65% to $90.87 per barrel, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures contract (CLV6) appreciated by 2.51% to $84.49 per barrel.

According to reports by Reuters, an Iranian official stated that Tehran will adopt a fully offensive military posture, given that efforts to negotiate with the United States have stalled. Conversely, US President Donald Trump remarked that Iran would fail to make the deal he considers necessary to end the war, suggesting that a potential ceasefire agreement remains far off. Consequently, ongoing diplomatic friction threatens a potential re-escalation following the expiration of the 60-day ceasefire deal on Monday. Furthermore, President Trump declared in an interview that he has no interest in extending the interim ceasefire agreement.

Notably, if ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran persist over the coming days, the conflict will reach the six-month mark since its onset on 28 February.
