Why did Alphabet shares tumble following its latest earnings report?

Alphabet Inc.’s shares plunged by 12.64% to $283.82 after the firm fell short of analysts' expectations in its latest quarterly financial report.

Alphabet (GOOGL) reported total revenue of $127.58 billion, slightly missing the analyst forecast of $127.96 billion. Meanwhile, the company recorded EPS of $2.12, falling significantly short of the market consensus estimate of $3.01. These figures represent a year-on-year revenue growth rate of 24.6%, contrasted with an annual contraction of 26% in EPS.

Furthermore, the technology giant reported a sharp drop in free cash flow, sparking concerns among market participants regarding the financial sustainability of its aggressive AI investment strategy. Against this backdrop, the company recorded a negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion—a stark reversal compared to the $24.46 billion inflow recorded in Q3 2025.

This free cash outflow was primarily attributable to capital expenditure (CapEx) reaching $51.36 billion in the third quarter, driven by heavy investment in AI infrastructure and related development projects. Notably, this level of CapEx required external financing, as operational cash flow was insufficient to meet investment requirements. Nevertheless, although Alphabet's total debt has trended upwards in recent quarters, its debt-to-equity ratio of 18.86% remains comfortably below the broader industry average of 37.14%, according to data published by Investing.com.

Operationally, the cloud division posted the most significant growth, as AI-integrated products continued to contribute meaningfully to overall top-line revenue. In this context, cloud segment revenue reached the $31 billion mark, as cited by CNBC. Conversely, revenue from the Search and Other segment maintained a decelerating trajectory, continuing a trend observed over recent quarters.

Technical analysis of Alphabet’s shares

From a technical perspective, Alphabet’s share price is undergoing a period of pronounced selling pressure. Key technical observations include:

  • Trend Context: Over the broader horizon, Alphabet's shares have surrendered their long-term bullish momentum, trading substantially below their 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day simple moving averages (SMAs). This alignment reinforces underlying bearish pressure. Crucially, the 50-day SMA is crossing below the 200-day SMA, signalling a potential inflection point in the stock's long-term market structure.
  • Momentum Indicators: The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator maintains a downward trajectory, confirming a prevailing bearish impulse, albeit within a historically low reading. Concurrently, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is trading in oversold territory, suggesting caution regarding the immediate sustainability of the downside momentum.
  • Resistance Levels: Should structural support near $280 hold and trigger an upward rebound, the immediate technical ceiling rests at the $300 psychological threshold. Beyond this lies structural resistance at $319—a prominent level that coincides with the Volume Profile's Value Area High (VAH).
  • Support Levels: Should ongoing selling pressure persist and break below the $280 support level, key technical floors are $245 (a prominent high-volume node) and $200 (a significant psychological threshold).
